The MTV Euro music awards voted Britney Spears' ‘Blackout’ as album of the year, leaving favourites Coldplay empty handed.
Spears also won the award for ‘Best act in 2008’, in a night which highlighted MTV’s allegiance to teen pop sensations.
Set in Liverpool’s Echo Arena, the night kicked off with a performance by Kate Perry, who later scooped up the award for ‘Best new act’.
Pink – who scooped the ‘Most addictive track award’ with ‘So What’ – also performed during the event, as did Beyonce (cough Sasha Fierce).
Rick Astley – of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ fame – provided the comic moment of the night as, in absentia, he won the award for ‘Best Act Ever’. Yes ever.
The bizarre online poll decision was fuelled by a year old on-line viral campaign in which an estimated 25million people were tricked, through fake internet links, into watching the video for ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.
German teen rockers Tokio Hotel won the ‘Best live band’ award, beating the likes of Metalica and the Cure.
Amidst the teen phantasmagoria, there was also a lifetime achievement award for Paul McCartney, who, in spite of being in his home-town, must have felt a touch out of place.
